selfless selfish

Selfishness, in something we are know and feel a lot of the time. It can also be thought of as self preservation to an extent, since being selfish is to care more about oneself than another. In life, we find ourselves in positions where we have to make choices and decisions. Lots of these decisions affect us personally, and hence we have an inbuilt bias towards making a decision that would benefit us in the best way possible.

Being selfish, a person can get caught up and totally worry about themselves first and not think of the 'whole picture' as it would be. People makes decisions sometimes that would keep more food for themselves to take home, or sometimes, make it easier to get their way. These kinda of selfish things we do, are known to us before we make them, but there is also another type of selfishness that we have that we do not realize, as we either don't know that we commit them, or we are naive of the effect our choices make.

There are lots of people in our world who feel selfish to things around them, such as communities, wealth, weather even and sometimes people. Some people call it patriotism, others comrade-ism. One of the most difficult things to do, is to be unselfish/selfless. Looking back into our historical archives we will find many many people who are described as pure and holy, perhaps on another level as ourselves. They are also almost always put in the same category as being selfless. Examples like Mother Teressa, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela show us what certain type of selfless people there exist, worrying the least about themselves but more about the people around them. Though the communities that are left behind are so caught up in their lives and small thoughts that they become selfish with these people as classifying them to be only for themselves (such as political antics and cultural, even to religious factions. The truth of the matter, is that these people are so selfless that they would act for the advantage of anyone who seemed oppressed and mistreated.

Although we all don't have the advantage of having the same aptitude as these people, we can try and aspire to be like them. Even thought that sometimes we may seem more selfish than not, we can also at times do our best to be selfless. We can perhaps not waste food, not litter, not do something to spite someone. These might seem insignificant, but the fact that we change our attitude is meaningful. Imagine of a world where anywhere you may go, people just like you would do selfless things to make life easier for everyone! This is an ideal and may never happen, but there is nothing stopping us from trying to at least bring some of it into our lives.

At the moment with some introspect, i know myself to be a bit selfish at at times, and i even remember myself giving advice to some people to being selfish with their feeling because not everyone is as caring that we would like, but at the same time i strive to be as selfless as possible, for we are here on this very earth physically only for a short time, and we will leave everything behind. What we can do is live a life of quality, and thus be happy.

Before we do something or say something, we should think about what other people would feel by our words, actions and even thoughts. We should literally try and think about the possible situations that we may not know of a person before judging them according to our standards.
